“For me, the way you explained a movement (or dance step) taking place inside the body with energy flowing, as well as the muscle response to that energy, and the mind “seeing” or directing the intent of that movement, really made sense. I felt I was internalizing something instead of just trying to copy or mimic you. It made for a deeper learning experience.” — Janet Herring, Angel Fire, NM

  •   Want to learn play those little hand held cymbals that everyone thinks of with belly dance? Then give this class a try! You’ll enjoy learning basic rhythm patterns to play with your cymbals, as well as practicing dancing with them too.
This class is open to all levels and is especially appropriate for newer finger cymbal players or those with more experience who would like to review basics.
You do not need to have your own finger cymbals (also called zils or sagat) for the first class. I have several sets that I will loan for class time. You may not even need to get your own cymbals at all, unless you want to, if I have enough to loan to everyone.

If you would like to order your own finger cymbals, you can buy a quality set from Saroyan Cymbals. They come in sets of 4 cymbals, 2 for each hand. I recommend getting student cymbals with 2 slots (as opposed to 1 hole) to start, as larger, heavier cymbals or cymbals with only 1 hole each can be difficult in the beginning. You are welcome to order less expensive cymbals somewhere else but I can’t vouch for the quality. They may be fine, you never know.

Private Lessons

I offer private lessons in person and on Skype to personalize your blissful belly dance experience! I also offer private instruction in Rajasthani Gypsy/Kalbelia Dance and Turkish Roman (gypsy) dance. In the focused time of your private lesson, we can really delve into the nitty-gritty of what will help you the most at this time in your belly dance evolution.

In private lessons, all levels of students have gained great benefit from my personalized instruction in the areas of:

  • in-depth understanding of movements
  • perfecting technique
  • feeling more confident with improvisation
  • developing emotional expression in belly dance
  • personal study in areas of belly dance outside the scope of regular class
  • perfecting their mastery of props such as veil, double veil, and sword
  • preparing for performances and other special dance projects
I find that private lessons are more successful when students are clear on the topic(s) they want to work on, so please come prepared. If I have not met you before your private lesson, I will ask you what you want to work on and possibly to see a video of you dancing before we meet. This is to insure that you and I make the most of our time together.

    • Annya Ishtara with Sword 3

“We met for an hour and I learned so much! While we danced together, Annya observed my style and was the first teacher to ever help me figure out what my strengths and weaknesses were! … Her comments were thought provoking and positive – not in a false, cheerleader way – but in a way that led me to believe that she really understood the mechanics of dancing.” — Pat Spark, Spark Fiber Arts, Albany, Oregon

“My 7 year old does private lessons in Indian/ Rajasthani dance with Annya and I’m amazed by how much my daughter has learned. It is definitely worth the money in my opinion because her interests are rare and her age makes it hard for her to do a group class and focus. I have been more than pleased with the results.”
    Marquita Herrera, Taos, NM

    Other Belly Dance Class Information

    What to Wear

Students wear yoga pants or tights or other stretchy, comfortable pants and a close fitting top that allows range of motion to be seen. Bare bellies are welcomed but not required!
I highly recommended that you bring a scarf or shawl to tie around your hips so that you can feel where your hips are and so that when you look in the mirror you can clearly see your hip movements. I also have coin hipscarves for sale in class. In addition to being fun, many students find the auditory feedback of the coins with their hip movements to be helpful in their learning.

    Payment and Refund Policy

Payment is due at or before the first class of a series unless other arrangements are made prior to class. Drop-in classes are paid in full at the time of class.

There are no refunds or class credits or make-up classes unless I cancel the class. If the student misses any scheduled classes that they have paid for for any reason, there are no make-up classes, refunds or credits.

Payment may be made in cash or check. You can also use the Paypal button for each class here on the Belly Dance Classes page. No credit or debit cards accepted at this time.
